Main varieties and uses of wire rods

finished products Wire rod coils

Wire rod generally refers to hot-rolled round steel with a diameter of 5.0-25mm or special-shaped steel equivalent to this section. Because it is delivered in a coiled state, it is collectively referred to as wire rod or wire rod. Wire rods are in high demand and production volumes are high. The common wire rods are mostly round section, and the special-shaped section wire rods are oval, square and threaded, etc., but the output is very small.
According to the characteristic requirements of use, different steel types can be used to classify the wire rods.

(1) Wire rods rolled from carbon structural steel: The typical grades of carbon structural steel used for wire rods are 9195, 0215, 0235, 0275 and Q195F, Q215F, 0235F. The rolled wire rod is widely used in the construction industry as a steel bar, and can also be used as a raw material for wire drawing, which is drawn into a steel wire by a cold drawing process. The drawn carbon structural steel wire is the most widely used variety. In addition to being used in the construction industry and as raw material for wire drawing, carbon structural steel rolled wire can also be used in the welding rod industry and in the manufacture of bolts, nuts and rivets.
(2) Wire rods rolled from high-quality carbon structural steel: The wire rods rolled from high-quality carbon structural steel are mainly used for wire drawing. Among them, low-carbon steels such as 08F, 15F, 08, 10, 15, 20, 25 and other grades are used to draw low-carbon steel wires and special-shaped steel wires for important purposes; medium and high carbon steels such as 30, 40, 50, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85 and other grades of rolled wire are used to manufacture carbon structural steel wire, spoke steel wire, tire ring steel wire, steel wire rope, spring steel wire, galvanized steel wire, steel core aluminum stranded wire etc.; the use of manganese steel such as 15Mn, 25Mn, 35Mn, 45Mn, 60Mn, 65Mn, 70Mn and other grades of rolled wire is used to draw carbon structural steel wire, spring steel wire, special-shaped steel wire, etc.
(3) Wire rods rolled from steel for welding: This type of wire rod is also called welding wire. Among the commonly used steel grades, non-alloy grades include H08A, HO8E, HO8C, HO8MnA, H15A, H15Mn, and low alloy grades include HO8CrMoA, H10CrMoA, H18CrMoA, HBOCrMnSiA, etc. Wire rods rolled from welding steel are mainly used in the manufacture of manual electric arc electrodes and welding wires for submerged arc welding, electroslag welding, gas welding and gas shielded welding.
(4) Wire rods rolled from stainless steel for welding: the typical grades of steel used are HOC21Ni10, HOCr19Ni12Mo2, HIC3, H1G5Mo, etc. The main purpose is the same as the wire rods rolled from welding steel.
(5) Stainless steel rolled wire: the steel used is mainly austenitic stainless steel. Steel wire, stainless steel wire rope, etc.
(6) Wire for piano wire: The steel used for wire for piano wire is mainly high-quality carbon structural steel and carbon tool steel with high carbon content. 80, 18MnA, T9A, etc., are mainly used for the production of other steel wires, spring steel wires, oil tempered valve steel wires, etc.
(7) Wire for prestressed steel wire and steel strand: This type of wire is also called hard wire. The steel used is special steel, which is characterized by high content (0.70%-0.85%), low content of sulfur and phosphorus (not more than 0.025%), and high tensile strength. Typical grades are 72, 75A, 75M0, 775, 7slnd, 80A, 80dnA, 82A, 82dnd. Mainly used for making prestressed wire and steel strand.
